An improved spooler drive for wire drawing machines and for the like spooling applications characterized in that it comprises a magnetic amplifier (having a main winding and a subsidiary winding) and a rectifier, the said rectifier being connectable to an a.c. supply through the main winding of the said magnetic amplifier, and the subsidiary winding of the said amplifier being connectable to a d.c. supply; and a separately excited d.c. motor, the armature of which is capable ol receiving supply from the said rectifier, such that an increase in the armature current produced by an increase in the motor-torque results in an increase in the voltage drop in the main winding of the magnetic amplifier, causing a reduction in armature voltage and, consequently, a reduction in the speed of the motor corresponding to the increase in motor-torque. ?? ?? ?? ??
