Violamycine antibiotic - prepd from streptomyces violaceus, has antiviral, antitumour and antimycoplasma activities

Antibiotic violamycine is obtd. from cultures of Streptomyces violaceus IMEt JA 6844 or a mutant, by incubating aerobically in a medium, pref. with added mineral salts for 2-6 days at 25-37 degrees with an initial pH 6.2-7.0. After extn. with solvent, the crude product is purified by solvent extn. and chromatography, giving up to 12 active components.
