Dicarboxylic acids are produced in high yields (e.g. 98-99%) and high purity (e.g. 99.5%) by (a) ozonolysing a cycloolefin in a lower monocarboxylic acid; (b) treating the product with aqs. H2O2 (pref. 20-30%); (c) passing the mixt. through a solid acid catalyst (pref. a cation exchanger or a supported mineral acid) at 30-60 degrees C with an LHSV 2-4; (d) completing the oxidn. in a separate reaction zone at 50-80 degrees C (LHSV = 0.3-0.5) in the absence of catalyst; and (e) decomposing the oxidn. product by heating at 90-110 degrees C.
