1395369 Novolac resin fibres NIPPON KYNOL Inc 27 Oct 1972 [5 Nov 1971] 49706/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Flame resistant continuous filaments are prepared by melt-spinning a mixture of a novolac resin and an aliphatic polyamide containing 0À1 to 5% by weight of the polyamide, curing the filaments with a curing agent in the presence of an acid catalyst and optionally stretching the filaments before and/or after curing. Preferred curing agents are formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde in the presence of a mineral or carboxylic acid. Curing is preferably effected at 5‹ to 150‹ F. and stretching at a draw ratio of up to 2À5. In examples novolac resins are prepared by reacting phenol and a mixture of phenol and p-cresol with formalin in the presence of oxalic acid. Filaments are then melt spun from mixtures of the phenol novolac with nylon 6 and nylon-11, 12 and the phenol/cresol novolac with nylon 66, and cured in aqueous or gaseous HCl/HCOH mixtures.
