1,066,282. Aircraft indicators. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. April 28, 1965 [May 15, 1964], No. 20359/64. Heading B7W. [Also in Division H3] In navigational equipment for an aircraft or aircraft flight simulator, the outline of an imaginary aircraft is projected on to the windscreen from a cathode-ray tube and the pilot is required to follow the imaginary aircraft to maintain course. The imaginary aircraft is seen in perspective, and is represented by five lines corrsponding to the two leading edges, two trailing edges and the fin of a delta wing. The co-ordinates of the points at the ends of the lines are computed from the aircraft flight data, from preset signals corresponding to the dimensions of the imaginary aircraft, and variable signals corresponding to the roll, pitch and yaw of the imaginary aircraft, i.e. the command signals, relative to the actual aircraft axes. The image is rotated in accordance with the roll angle of the actual aircraft, and may be produced on the cathode-ray tube as a television image, or as described, by deflection of the electron beam to form the five lines (see Division H3), and a horizon line. For landing, the image also contains two lines representing the edges of a runway, the distance from the touchdown point being represented by the arc of a circle centred on the base of the fin of the imaginary aircraft, the length of the arc being a measure of the distance. The image may also contain a speed error indicator, and in digital form the altitude and air-speed (Fig. 7, not shown).
