Polyalkyltetralins of formula where R is H or C 1-5 alkyl are prepared by reacting a 2,3-dimethylbutene with ½-methyl styrene (optionally containing R as a para-substituent) at 65-120‹ C. in the presence of an activated clay or a cation exchange resin as catalyst. The process is preferably carried out in a solvent, e.g. excess 2,3-dimethylbutene or an aromatic hydrocarbon. The 2,3-dimethylbutene reactant is preferably a mixture of the 1- and 2-isomers. The products may be purified by crystallization, e.g. from isopropyl alcohol. Examples describe the preparation of 1,1,3,4,4,6- hexamethyltetralin and 1,1,3,4,4-pentamethyl- 6-ethyl-tetralin.
