At least one wall of the accumulator casing is transparent at microwave frequencies and the other walls are enclosed within a microwave shielding outer case, lined with microwave absorbent material e.g. ferrite or graphite, and thermally lagged externally. Against the transparent wall remaining is a radiator assembly with a microwave source such that the direction of propagation is parallel to the plate assemblies in the cells through which the energy passes. From the main radiator casing a bleed fraction of the microwave energy may be extracted by e.g. directional coupler into a waveguide terminated in a dummy load incorporated in the working fluid circuit of the vehicle heater system proper.
