The appliance provides a roll-up cover for a swimming pool, or other basin holding liquid, and a brush engaging one side of the cover and running across its direction of movement, to clean it. The rotatably mounted cylindrical brush roller (25), is linked to a drive unit so that its direction of rotation always corresponds to the unrolling direction of the cover for closing the pool, regardless of the direction in which the cover (9) is moving at the time. The drive for the roller may be linked to the drive for the cover via a reversing gear. There may be a second brush roller on the opposite side of the cover, rotating in the opposite direction. Simple structure and drive systems ensure intensive cleaning of the cover during every movement process, whether opening or closing, esp. with covers over very large pools.
