Operation of supply and/or storage plants for natural gas or similar products, to which purified crude gas is supplied, esp. 'peak-shaving' plants, whereby the compressed methane fraction arising in the course of separation of methane-contg. decomposition products in petrochemical plants is at least partly liquefied and is supplied to the supply and/or storage plant. Specif., the liquefaction of a part of the methane fraction is carried out by means of an open refrigeration circuit in which a part of the compressed methane fraction is cooled to such an extent by heat exchange with the work-producing expanded remaining part that it exists partly as liquid after subsequent valve expansion.
