Vaginal tampons are impregnated with substances normally present in the vaginal medium in order to maintain "physiological acid protection" (i.e. protection against infection by trichomonads, Candida albicans, streptococci, staphylococci, coli bacteria, etc. by maintainance of a pH of ca. 4). The substances used are those involved in the formation of lactic acid in the vagina (i.e. water-sol. glycogen, sugar, "Doderlein" bacteria, or oestrogen and/or progesterone), or lactic acid itself. The tampon can also be impregnated with vitamins and/or bacteriostats.
