With edges held on each needle row, an inextensible cord is doubled between them, held around a peg at one end and clamped at the other. One row then transfers its stitches to the other, forming a tunnel through which the cord runs. Both stitch rows are then transferred to the transfer needle bar, which then swings up. The stitches of the edge further from the transfer needle points are clamped to the needles (by a flat bar holding them against the transfer needle shanks, or by a bar with upstanding hooks) while a second transfer bar engages its needle tips in the needle tips of the first transfer bar.
