Bis- 4-hydroxymethyl-5-hydroxy-6-methylpyridiyl-3-methyl disulphide (I) is prepd. by reacting 3-CH2OH-4-MeOCH2-5-OH-6-methylpyridine HCl with SOCl2 to 3-CH2Cl cpd. reacting this either directly with alkali disulphide to the bis 4,4'-dimethyl ether of (I). i.e. (II), or with alkali xanthates, isocyanates, thioacetates, thiosulphates, trithiocarbonates or urea or dithiocarbamic acid salts to give appropriate nucleophilic substitution at 3 posn. then converting these intermediates to (II) and acid hydrolysing (II) to (I). Suitably direct reaction of 3-CH2Cl is in aq. alcohol with Na2S2 and (III) is hydrolysed without isolation using dil. HCl or H2SO4. (I) is used to treat disorders of cerebral function e.g. neuroses, chronic alcoholism, Parinsonism. The starting material is readily available since it is an inter. in the synthesis of the Vitamin B6.
