Bufalone and derivs prepn - by microbiological redn of scillarenone

Prepn of cpds of formula (I): (X=O, alpha H beta OH or beta H alpha OH) comprises fermenting scillarenone (II) under conventional conditions with a microorganism of the genus Clostindium. (I) are inters for pharmaceuticals. Short fermentations favour (I, X=O), longer times (I, beta H alpha OH) (I, alpha H beta PH) is a minor product. Fermentation is under anaerobic conditions using e.g. C paraputrificum of C. tertium.
