A continuous vulcanising or cross-linking method, for the natural or synthetic rubber sheaths of electrical cables or similar metal objects, consists of heating the sheath material after it has been extruded around the cable. The heat transfer medium used is conducted in contraflow to the movement of the sheath through the vulcanising or cross-linking zone. Prefd. media are steam (typically at 200-220 degrees C), hot air, or hot gas, esp. a shielding gas such as N2 or N2- mixtures. With gas, additional heating may opt. be used in the vulcanising or cross-linking zone.
