Hot compacting metal powders to dense shape - inside sealed capsule with reinforcement to prevent bursting

The capsule is cylindrical and may have a thickened flange at the bottom end. It is placed on a flat plate with a circular die round it resting on the flange and held in this position while the press ram is forced down into the die on to the top of the capsule. Reinforcement prevents bursting of the capsule before the compacting is finished and allows production of a powder metallurgical compact of the desired shape. The flange forms an integral part of the finished compaction and may be left on or it may be machined off together with the rest of the capsule. The powder may be of micro or macro size. Compaction takes place at 1300 degrees C.
