Title cpd. (I) is prepd. by nitrating p-cresol-(l), pptg. (I) carbonate at 85-100 degrees C and saponifying at 65-80 degrees C with aq. NH3 or at up to 80 degrees C with an amine R1 R2 NH (where R is 1-5C alkyl, 2-5C-hydroxy alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, amino alkyl, N-alkylamino alkyl each contg. 2-5C or N, N-dialkyl amino alkyl contg. 3-5C; R2 is H or alkyl; R1 and R2 together contg. 2-5C or NR1R2 is a 5-or 6-membered heterocyclic ring). Title cpd. is used in prodn. of herbicides and dyestuffs.
