N,N'-bis- 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxyethyl -hexa-methylened- iamine is prepd. by condensing 1,6-hexane diamine with a cpd. of formula (I): (where R is a protecting gp. which can be removed by hydrogenolysis and R1 = H, or lower alkyl) to give a cpd. of formula (II): which is reduced using a complex hydride, pref. NaBH4, before removing the protecting gps. The prod. is converted to the free base or a desired acid addn. salt.
