1433896 Polyureas W R GRACE & CO 25 April 1973 [12 May 1972] 19727/73 Heading C3R Aqueous solutions or dispersions of polyureas are prepared by preparing a non-cross-linked polymer by reacting a first component comprising a polyisocyanate and/or polyisothiocyanate and a second component comprising a polyamine having 2-23 amino groups and a non - protonic carbonyl containing solvent selected from acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde, the molar ratio of NCO groups in the first component to amino groups in the second component being from 1 : 1 to 1 : 20, and the polyamine and solvent having first been mixed for from 2 minutes to 24 hours at - 5‹ to 150‹ C., adding water and epichlorohydrin to the non-crosslinked polymer and removing the solvent. The first and second components are generally stirred together at 0-100‹ C. for 2 minutes- 8 hours to effect polymerization to the non- cross-linked polymer. In examples 1-7 diethylene-triamine is reacted with acetone and then either with a diisocyanate prepared by reacting polyoxyethylene glycol (M.Wt. 1000) with tolylene diisocyanate, or with a polymeric triisocyanate prepared by reacting tolylene diisocyanate with a triol of M.Wt. 3300 and a 2 : 1 ratio of ethylene oxide/propylene oxide units. The acetone is then replaced by water and epichlorohydrin is added. Upon drying the resultant aqueous slurries tough elastomeric films are formed.
