Hardened austenitic manganese steel for repairing steel articles, such as blast furnace cores, by welding or metallisation, without preheating or with moderate preheating exercised without rigorous temp. control consists, after recharging, of (wt.%) 0.6-2.5 C, 9-19 Mn, 5-21 Cr, 0.25-5 Nb, and/or Ta, and 0-5 Mo, W, V, Ti, Si and/or Ni, the balance, apart from the usual impurities, being Fe. The repaired articles have a better workability, hardness, abrasion resistance, and resistance to cracking than articles repaired with known steels.
