Spent carbon and excess biomass from the second stage are preferably recycled to the wet air oxidation stage where they are oxidized optionally admixed with sewage sludge or night soil. This process regenerates the activated carbon. The biological oxidation step may be modified to provide nitrification and denitrification of the effluent.
