Hypericin prepn - by extraction of hypericum flowers

Hypericine and analogous cpds., such as pseudohypericine and protohypericine, which are useful as pigments, are prepd. from the flowers of Hypericum plants as follows. The flowers are dried and extracted wtih a CO- gp. -contg. solvent, then the soln. is treated with water and washed with a hydrocarbon. This eliminates lipids and carotenoids. The aq. soln. is evapd. and hypericin and its analogues are pptd. They are filtered off, taken up in an ester, and washed several times with water to eliminate glycosides. The organic soln. is evapd. to give the hypericin, etc.
