Metal billet electroslag remelting apparatus comprises a cooled mould having a bottom plate and a holder for a consumable electrode. Vertical displacement of the mould bottom plate and electrode may be effected by a drive. A flange on the top edge of the mould supports an outer flange of a cylindrical screen which dips into the slag. The screen concentrates the heat released in the slag and radiated by the electrode and protects the cooled walls of the mould from overheating. After the bottom of the screen is burnt it may be lowered for reuse.
