Multistrand carbon fibre is laid in grooves formed in the surface of partly filled mould, so that it is laminated into electrodes made e.g. from coke/pitch melted together with tar; or the lamination may be with ribbon, or woven fibre. Alternatively short carbon fibres may be mixed into melt, or fibre may be fitted to holes bored in completed electrodes. Electrodes are completed by expelling tar in an electric furnace, and heat treating for several days at 1100 degrees C. The electrode may be safely used even when deeply fissured.
