The tags have spikes at each end; when these are bent over and closed, each spike is rolled in an opposite direction in the opposing embossed cup. Resistance is therefore met when any attempt is made to open the folded tag. The punch for applying the tag, e.g. to the wing of a chicken, comprises a body with a grip which carries the control elements. The tags are joined together in a continuous strip, wound on a spool; the strip is moved forwards, step-by-step, by-a sliding block. A die carries the marks to be embossed on the tags and has the initials of the veterinary inspector, together with the code number of the abattoir. A block of dies preforms the tags and is mounted at the end of the push-rod of the piston of a pneumatic cylinder. The tags are folded, detached and closed by the movement of a finger attached to a sliding block. The control markings are easily replaceable by altering the dies for different inspectors.
