Active ingredients for medical and veterinary use in treating protozoal infections caused by trichomonades and amoebae, e.g. T. vagnilis and E. Histolytica, have formula (I): (where R1 is H, Me2 Et or 2-hydroxyethyl and R2 is H or Me), pref. (I) where (i) R1 is Me and each R2 is H(ii) R, is 2-hydroxyethyl and each R2 is H; (iii) R1 is Me and each R2 is Me. (I) are prepd. by condensing 1-alkyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-aldehydes (II), or their function derivs., with 1-amino-1,3,4-triazoles (III).
