Gas from large installations is cleaned to remove pollution, e.g. abrasive or explosive solids; viscous, fluid, or light substances, or liquids liable to solidification, prior to discharge to atmos. in a single appts., which comprises a vertical cylindrical tower, e.g. converging towards a top outlet, with a bottom central gas inlet, surrounded by a liq. sump with provision for recycling. An axial shaft rotates sets of vanes at two or more levels, and has a hollow centre to feed water spray nozzles on vanes and adjacent to gas inlet. Internal fins, e.g. parallel to axis, form inertial baffles, and also co-operate with vanes, which are flexible, to induce resonance; thus forming microcyclonic pptn. vortices. Coagulation occurs at collision between axial and centrifuged streams. Droplets falling from upper part of tower, are redispersed, until, by absorption of pollutants, they acquire sufficient viscosity to adhere to tower walls.
