Rotary kiln for petroleum coke calcination - passes combustion air over preheated charge in parallel flow

Carbonaceous material (petroleum coke for mfr. of electrodes) is preheated, prior to introduction in a rotary kiln, to a temp. where the liberation of volatile matter begins. In the kiln, heated to 1250-1350 degrees C the volatile matter is burned in air which is admitted in a parallel flow to the charge over the whole length of the zone in which the volatile matter is extracted. High quality finished prod. is obtd. even from coke high in sulphur. Good carbon yield (up to 95%) and high thermal efficiency are obtd. No extraneous fuel is required.
