Chalcogenide glasses of high thermal stability - contg. aluminium or gallium and/or germanium and rare earth

A wide range of aluminium and gallium chalcogenide glasses are of formula La2-zZzCH3 where La is a rare earth metal; Z is Al or Ga or (Ga+Ge), Ch is S or Se. and 1 = z 2. Specif. the rare earth metals are La,Ce,Pr, Nd,Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Er and Yb. The glasses which find use as laser windows, seeker heads etc. are thermally stable to temps. 250 degrees C the limit of known chalcogenide glasses. Compsns. are made by wetting component chalcogenides (or the metals in H2S) and quenching followed by heat treatment. Glasses are i.r. transparent.
