The apparatus is arranged on a pneumatic jack 301-305 and an automatic control circuit acts to heat the two masses to a predetermined temperature, whereupon the jack is actuated to urge the masses into contact with a surface of a body of which the co-efficient s is to be measured. The temperature of the central mass 201 is then recorded as it cools and the temperature curve obtained may be used to determine s.
