The latter is mounted on two skids 2 running beneath two legs 3 having hydraulic rams 4 which abut the skids, and the skids are connected to the legs by rams 8. Support 11 in the form of an "H" shaped frame is releasably connected to platform 1 by pivot pins 15, 16, and is vertically movable by hydraulic jacks 13, and is pivotable relative to the platform by rams 21. Screw jacks 25 are provided at the top of the frame and carriage 32 is pivotally connected to a cross-member 23 vertically adjustable on frame 11, the ends of the carriage being provided with screw anchoring attachments 40 which abut the sides, roof, or floor, of the mine roadway during operation. Drilling machine 36 is driven by an hydraulic motor 41 supplied by a pump 51, water is supplied to the drill rods from pump 39, and further pumps 44, 51, driven by an electric motor 46, supply pressure fluid to the various rams of the apparatus. Tanks 47, 52, for hydraulic fluid, and for receiving rock cuttings, methane and borehole water are provided, and a rack 60 for storing drill rods, an operator's stand and tool box 61, and three control panels 62, 63, 64, are also provided. Support member 11 may be in the form of a turret and the selfadvancing platform 1 may be mounted on crawler tracks.
