1347066 Cross - linked polyesteramides BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [18 March 1970] 23607/71 Headings C3P and C3R A cross-linked high M.W. substance containing carboxylic acid ester and amide groups is made by heating at 100-300‹ C. a mixture comprising a polyoxazoline (P) and a polycarboxylic acid (Q). (Q) contains 2 or more COOH groups as the only groups reactive with oxazoline rings; it has average M.W. #600 and acid number #10, or is a polymer containing # 0À3% wt. of incorporated α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid units. At least one of (P) and (Q) has functionality 2 w.r.t. oxazoline rings or COOH groups. Polyoxazoline (P) may be where R and RSP1/SP are H, C 1-8 alkyl, or C 6-12 aryl, RSP11/SP is an organic radical of valency (n+ 1), and n is 1 to 3. RSP11/SP may be a C 1-8 alkylene or C 6-12 aromatic radical. Polycarboxylic acid (Q) may be a polyester of an aliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acid and a polyol; a poly addition product of a polyol and an alkylene oxide whose terminal OH groups have been esterified with 1 mole polycarboxylic acid anhydride per OH group; a polyester of a hydroxy-acid or lactone; the reaction product of an aliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acid with an OH-containing polycarbonate; a carbonyl-group-containing alkyd resin; a homopolymer of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid; or a copolymer of an α,#-unsaturated acid with one or more vinyl or vinylidene monomers, such copolymers being exemplified by styrene/acrylic acid/n-butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid, ethyl acrylate/methacrylic acid and butadiene/acrylonitrile/methacrylic acid copolymers. The ratio (P) : (Q) is such that there is 0À1 to 1 oxazolinyl group per COOH group. (P) and (Q) may be mixed in organic solvent which is evaporated before the mixture is heated to 100-300‹ C. or (P) and (Q) may be mixed in the absence of solvents, e.g. as powders. Or (P) and (Q) may be fused together at up to 140‹ C., cooled, and granulated or powdered. Before cross-linking, fillers, pigments, stabilizers, antioxidants, or plasticizers may be incorporated. Use.-The as yet uncrosslinked mixture may be used in solution or as a powder for coating steel, glass, or iron plates; for forming films; as adhesives; and for mouldings.
