SCHAPPIJ NV 23 Dec 1970 [17 Feb 1970] 7527/70 Heading C2C Quinones of formula wherein X is halogen or an amino group optionally mono-substituted by alkyl or oycloalkyl or optionally disubstituted by an alkyl or cycloalkyl group and by an acyi group, or by an alkyl group and a nitroso group, Y is halogen atom or an amino group optionally monosubstituted by alkyl, cycloalkyl or N-alkylcarbamoyl, and A, together with the carbon atoms of the quinone ring to which it is attached, forms a five-membered aromatic heterocyclic ring containing at least one nitrogen atom and optionally substituted by alkyl or haloalkyl, are prepared by (a) reaction of a 2,3-dihalobenzoquinone with a diazo compound RSP1/SPCHN 2 , in which RSP1/SP is hydrogen or alkyl, or with an alkyl nitrile oxide, (b) halogenation of a compound of formula wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl, (c) reaction of a product wherein X or Y is halogen with ammonia or an amine, (d) N-acylation or (e) N- nitrosylation. The products are herbicides.
