1442266 Stabilizing polyolefins HERCULES Inc 18 Jan 1974 02382/74 Heading C3P High density polyethylene or crystalline propylene polymer is stabilized with (A) a phenolic antioxidant which is (1) a terpene/ phenol condensate of molecular weight at least 400 or (2) an A-stage para-alkylphenol/formaldehyde condensate of molecular weight at least 500, (B) a defined thiodialkanoic acid/ polyhydric alcohol polyester of molecular weight at least 500 and (C) oxalic acid bis- (benzylidene hydrazide) or adipic acid bis- (acetyl hydrazide). The propylene polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer with up to 25 weight per cent of another olefin, e.g. ethylene, preferably a block copolymer. The antioxidant may be a condensate of dipentene, pinene or limonene with phenol, cresol, butylphenol or propylphenol, or of formaldehyde with p-t-butyl, p-t-amyl, p-t-heptyl, p-octyl or p-t-nonylphenol. The polyester may be a reaction product of thiodipropionic acid with ethylene glycol or cyclohexane dimethanol, optionally with a small proportion of monohydric alcohol such as stearyl alcohol. The compositions may be used for insulating wires in petroleumjelly-filled telephone cables. Examples describe compositions comprising propylene/ethylene block copolymer or polyethylene, calcium stearate, α-pinene/phenol or octylphenol/ formaldehyde consate, thiodipropionic acid/ cyclohexanedimethanol / stearyl alcohol polyester and hydrazide.
