1422897 Rolling mills MASCHINENFABRIK SACK GmbH 25 July 1974 [2 Aug 1973] 32797/74 Heading B3M [Also in Division B8] Between the stand 1 of a hot strip rolling mill and a take-up reel 5 is a driving roll stand 4 having rollers 4a and 4b which can float axially during reeling, in order to minimize lateral wander of the strip on the reel. The rollers are coupled together for axial movement relative to a fixed bed 6, and are attached to the piston 9 of a servomotor 8. The servomotor is controlled by valves 16 and 22 for either allowing free movement of the rollers or clamping them in a desired position. Before reeling commences, a position detector 11 so controls the valve 16 that the rollers are held axially fixed in a desired position. Only when signals from transducers 25, 15 and 25 (which indicate that the mill, drive rollers and reel are under load) are received, is the valve 22 operated to assume the position shown, in which free axial movement is possible.
