Ethyl bromide can be produced by direct fixation of HBr on ethylenic double bond cpds., normally ethylene, in a process using electric fields as catalyst for the reaction. Reactor vessel can be condenser as used in production of ozone or made up of two parallel flat glass plates separated by a gasket at a gap of e.g. 0.1 mm, each plate coated with a sheet of metal on their outside surface. Ethylene and HBr in equimolecular portions are passed through the gap between the plates and a high intensity electric field of =1 MV/cm is applied via high voltage electrostatic generator or transformer, the ethylene and HBr combining to form ethyl bromide.
