1485274 Solid/liquid contact J R BENZARIA 22 Oct 1974 [22 Oct 1973] 45610/74 Heading B1F [Also in Division C1] A process for the absorption of a component of a fluid on beds of activated carbon comprises passing the fluid through a lower bed of activated carbon at a rate sufficient to maintain that bed fluidised, and then through an upper fixed or expanded bed at a flow rate in a ratio of not less than 1 to 10 with respect to the flow rate in the lower bed, the ratio of flow rates being determined by the ratio of cross-section areas of the beds. As shown the fluid is passed first through the narrow bed 2 in which its velocity is sufficient to fluidise the particles and then through the wider bed 3 in which the velocity is insufficient to produce fluidisation but may maintain the bed in an "expanded" condition. The process is applicable to the purification of water.
