1492066 Flameproofing textiles CIBA-GEIGY AG 16 Dec 1974 [17 Dec 1973] 54297/74 Headings D1B and D1P [Also in Division B1] An organic solvent free flameproofing composition for textiles comprises, (a) one or more bromoriated cycloalkanes with 7 to 12 ring carbon atoms and 4 to 6 bromine atoms bonded to these ring carbon atoms, as sole flameproofing agent, and (b) a dispersant. Preferably the composition is an aqueous dispersion of 50 to 700 g/kg of (a), 0.1 to 300 g/kg of (b) and 0 to 30 g/kg of a protective colloid (c). (a) is a liquid or more preferably a solid of m.p. 20 to 200‹C. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 hexabromocycloheptane, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 1, 2, 4, 6 tetrabromocyclooctane, and 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10-hexabromocyclododecane are specified. Specified dispersants are the condensate of formaldehyde and naphthalene sulphonic acid, the sodium salt of 1-benzyl-2- heptadecyl-benzimidazole-disulphonic acid, the condensate of cresol, 2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid and formaldehyde, lignin sulphonate from acid or alkali wood pulp, the sodium salt of oleylmethyl tauride and the condensate of ethylene oxide with 4-nonylphenol, oleic acid, laurylamine or a fatty alcohol. Specified colloids are polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl, hydroxyethyl hydroxypropyl or methyl cellulose, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, gelatin, starch, acid casein and polymers of acrylic acid, ethyl acetate and methylmethacrylate. The composition may also contain 1.33 or 2.67 g/kg of the optical brightener or 2.4 to 28g/kg of the dye The dispersion is ground in a sand, glass ball or carborundum disc mill to give I to 30 micron particles of (a). The dispersion may be dried and subsequently redispersed in water. Staple fibres, continuous filaments or woven or knitted fabrics of polyethylene terephthalate, poly(1, 4 cyclohexylene-dimethylene terephthalate) or nylon 6, 66 or 11 are treated with the dispersion by spraying, printing, padding or exhaustion, dried at up to 100‹C then heated to 100 to 220‹C to fix the flameproofing agent at an add-on of 0.5 to 7% by weight.
