1469816 Sperm separation SCHERING AG 10 April 1974 [19 April 1973] 15975/74 Heading C6F Sperms of a desired motility are extracted from a dispersion of such sperms and sperms of lesser motility by bringing the dispersion into interfacial contact with a fluid medium of higher density and maintaining contact until the sperms of desired motility have passed into the medium. The desired sperms may be Y sperms and the dispersion may be of X and Y sperms. The dispersion may be overlayed on the medium, or the medium may be underlayed to the dispersion. The sperms may be e.g. human, cattle, sheep or rabbit sperms and the dispersion may be semen or sperms dispersed in Tyrode solution. The medium may be of the same liquid as is used for the dispersion but containing an additive, e.g. ovalbumin, bovine globulin or bovine serum albumin. Contact may be maintained for 0.5-10 hours. The density of the medium may be 3-50% greater than that of the liquid in which the sperms are dispersed. The fluid medium containing motile (or Y) sperms may be brought into a further fluid medium of still higher density to further separate the sperms, and the process may be repeated a third time to ensure the desired degree of separation.
