1482152 Collagen compositions ELASTINWERK AG 17 July 1974 [18 July 1973] 31659/74 Heading C3H A composition suitable for making shaped articles, e.g. sausage skins, comprises an aqueous collagen-containing paste or dispersion and a precondensate of at least one compound containing an amino group and at least one aldehyde, the precondensate optionally containing one or more structural units derived from a polyhydroxy compound. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, furfuraldehyde, glycerolaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, or starch dialdehyde and the polyhydroxy compound is glycerol, sorbitol, polyoxymethylene or hydroxycellulose. The amino compound may be urea, milk casein, gelatine, soya casein, an albumin, keratin or ethylenediamine. The collagen may be contained in an animal hide fibre composition, the precondensate may be prepared by maintaining a mixture of the amino compound, the aldehyde and the aldehyde at a temperature of 25‹ to 90‹ C. for a period of 40-400 minutes, preferably in presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. ammonia, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, hexamine, hydroxylamine, hydrazine or a basic salt, or in presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. a mineral acid, an acid salt or an organic acid, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric or sulphurous acid, potassium bisulphite or ammonium sulphite, or formic, acetic, lactic or citric acid.
