1358356 Purifying sewage W ALDAG 7 July 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 32068/72 Heading C1C An apparatus for purifying sewage comprises aeration chamber 1, clarification chamber 2 for receiving a rising stream of liquid from aeration chamber 1, and shaped so that the speed of the liquid decreases as the stream rises, clarified liquid outlet 5 and one or more pumps 7 each associated with a suction pipe 6 which is adjustable in height, for sucking suspended matter from the zone in chamber 2 in which the tendency of the suspended matter to sink owing to gravity is substantially the same as its tendency to be carried upwards in the stream, and returning at least part of the liquid to the aeration chamber 1. The aeration chamber 1 is provided with rotating aerating paddles 4 and submerged aerating pipes 3. The partition wall 8 may be inclined. To reduce adhesion of matter to the walls of the clarifying chamber the walls may be coated with plastics or screened with air or wall 8 may be a plastics sheet which is vibrated by the aeration and flow of liquid. The suction pipes 6 may be adjusted simultaneously. Control means may be provided for detecting the speed of flow of liquid in chamber 2 and for adjusting the suction pipes to position them correctly, the position of the said zone in chamber 2 being dependent on the speed of liquid flowing in chamber 2.
