RECOVERY OF COPPER FROM COPPER-IRON SULFIDE ORE

1324939 Copper recovery AMERICAN METAL CLIMAX Inc 21 Dec 1971 [25 Jan 1971] 59491/71 Heading C7D Cu-Fe sulphide ores are concentrated to at least 15%Cu, dead roasted to reduce the S content to no more than 1% and then treated by the segregation process (i.e. solid state reduction with carbon as a reductant in the presence of an alkali metal halide) to form reduced copper particles in aggregated form, which may readily be recovered, substantially without reduction of any iron oxides. The S in the gaseous effluent of the dead roasting step may be recovered as elemental S, SO 2 or H 2 SO 4 , and the final recovery may be by flotation.
