18-Methylene steroids of formula (I):- (where R = an esterified hydroxy group, pref. derived from a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid, or also from aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or heterocyclic organic acids (pref. 1-18C) or inorganic acids;.... = a possible further double bond at pos. 6, 7; are prepd. by esterification of a cpd. (II) using acid anhydride or halide in the presence of tert. base or strong acid, and opt. introduction of 6, 7-double bond by dehydration, using e.g. a quinone. (I) may be used as gestagens and contraceptives. They may also be used as inters. in the prepn. of other active cpds. and may be given as feedstuff additives.
