Aromatic ethylenic double bond-contg. cpds. used as optical brighteners outside the textile industry are of formula (where A1 and A2 are H, Ph or diphenylyl-4; B1 and B2 show that each of 2 Ph gps. of diphenyl structure can contain further linearly or angularly fused-on benzene rings; p is 1 to 3, W4 is an alpha- or beta- naphthyl, Ph, diphenylyl-4-, pyridyl-3-, thienyl-2, or furyl-2 gp. contg. 1-3 substits. q1, denoting H, alkoxy, phenoxy halogen, 1C alkyl, dialkylamino or methylene-dioxy, n is integer 1 to 2, and the free posns. of the diphenyl nucleus are opt. substd. by 1st order substits. which are free from atoms replaceable by alkali metal). (I) are for optically brightening natural or synthetic organic matl. e.g. high mol. wt. polymers, polycondensates or pre-condensates.
