New heterocyclic cpds., for use as optical brighteners outside the textile industry, are of formula (I):- (where R2 is H, 2 Ph, 1-12C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halogen; r is 1 or 2; E4 is Ph, naphthyl or thienyl opt. substd. by halogen, 1-18C alkyl, alkoxy, alkylamine, opt. substd. Ph, or a condensed-on hydroaromatic, carbocyclic 6-ring or -OCH2O- ring; a is 1 or 2 and X is -O- or -S-). (I) are (semi-)synthetic organic high m.w. materials, natural organic material of animal or plant origin with uses including mixtures with dyes and pigments and additives to dyebaths, printing pastes, finishing agents and bleaching baths detergent compsns., polymer carriers, glues, adhesives, and paints and also as scintillators for photography, e.g. electrophotographic reproduction or super-sensitising.
