Two tubes (1, 2) are releasably joined together by an insert (11) which comprises two rectangular section bars (11, 12) inserted longitudinally into the tubes and where separation can be varied by means of a set screw (7) threaded into one bar (11) and bearing on the other bar (12). The set screw is adjustable through an aperture (6) formed in one tube (2). Above and below the set screw are located spring loaded pins (14, 14') which snap into positions in apertures (4, 5) formed in respective tube walls. The pins locate the tube both axially and rotationally. The connector is useful for joining standpipes. The spring housing (15) is retained in shoes in a spring loaded plunger arrangement.
