Nitration of organic cpds - with control of nitration rate by inhibitors, esp nitrites and phosphates

In a process for nitration with HNO3 the rate of nitration is reduced by adding a nitration inhibitor which is more strongly basic than NO3-. The process is specif. applied to the nitration of anthraquinone. Suitable inhibitors are nitrites and phosphates (including H3PO4). After adding the inhibitor the nitration mixt. is rectified to give a HNO3 fraction and a nitrated product-contg. residue. The distilled NHO3 fraction further concd. if necessary by distilln. is re-used. H3PO4 inhibitor is also recovered and may be re-used.
