The design of a knot detection unit, in monitoring the yarn fed to a knitting machine, has a fork-shaped component through which the yarn passes, held in opposing bearings where one bearing has a bearing surface running parallel to the tipping direction of the monitor with a second bearing surface describing a spiral path leading to the direction of the opposite bearing. The design ensures that while the tipping action of the monitor, on being dragged by an over-size knot, triggers the machine stop action, without a breaking strain imposed on the yarn caught in the monitor which would lead to a breakage close to the knitting station with a short yarn end which could not be grasped and lead to a missed stitch.
