Metal xanthates continuous prodn. - by mixing alcohols, dry metal hydroxide powder and diluent and reacting with carbon disulphide

Metal xanthates of formula (I): RO-CS-SM (where R is alkyl or aralkyl, M is a metal, pref. Na or K) are produced continuously by (a) mixing an alcohol ROH, dry powdered metal hydroxide and an inert organic diluent, (b) passing the mixt. through at least one reaction zone supplied with CS2, and (c) isolating the product. Cpds. (I) are used as flotation aids for ore processing, as vulcanisation accelerators and as herbicides. The process gives high yields (e.g 90-97%) of high-purity products (95-97% pure).
