New spiro cpds. of formula (I) and their acid addition salts (R1 = H, lower alkyl, F, Cl, Br or CH3O, R2 = H, lower alkyl, Cl or CH3O, or R1+R2 are together methylenedioxy, R3 = OH, lower alkylcarbonyloxy or alkylcarbamoyloxy, A = 1.3-dioxan- or 1,3-dioxolan-2-ylidene) are prepd. by reacting corresp. spiro indane-1,3-pyrrolidine (II) with cpds. of formula (III): (X = Cl, Br, I, or the residue of an organic sulphonic acid). (I) are analgesics and CNS depressants useful e.g. as sedatives, for treating excited states and sleep disorders. Usual dose for large mammals is 50-500 mg in unit doses of 12-250 mg (analgesics) or 3-75 mg (CNS depressants).
