An ultrasonic receiver (6) has a connected amplifier (7) and rectifiers with filters (8) detect the ultrasonic vibrations reflected from the target object. A threshold amplifier (9) with connected differentiator (10) amplifies and differentiates pulses exceeding the threshold value of the amplifier. A timing generator (3) controls a multivibrator (4) and an oscillator (2) which excites the ultrasonic transmitter (1). The multivibrator produces one pulse and controls a gate (11). Another multivibrator produces another pulse and controls a second gate (12). There is a delay circuit and an output amplifier. The ultrasonic transmitter and receiver are both bimorphic piezo-electric elements.
